Currently, the Roman Forum is the remains, the ruins of the once most magnificent structure in the world. But they also attract as many visitors as no other historical monument. Tourists can personally visit the Curia, where the Roman Senate met, in the stands of the Roman Forum, at the Black Stone, which is considered the tomb of the founder of the city of Romulus, a low structure in the form of a stone well - the Navel of the Earth, at the Golden Mile - the beginning of all roads.

History of the Roman Forum

The Roman Forum was rebuilt on the site of a swamp where the first Romans buried their deceased loved ones. The ruler Tarquinius created a drainage system, and the site of a rather large volume turned into a dry earth mass. Initially, there were no buildings on it, just merchants gathered and meetings of the highest caste of townspeople were held. After Rome became a republic, major construction work began, during which the Roman Forum was formed. The main stages of construction, according to historical data, are:

  • Temple of the Purifier of Venus,
  • Black stone,
  • The Tribunes of the Speakers and the Comitia,
  • The navel of the Earth (city),
  • Dioscuri Temple,
  • Temple of Saturn and Sacred Road,
  • Temples of Concordia and Vespasian,
  • construction of the Three Basilicas.

Construction work was carried out for almost 6 centuries, periodically stopped, but always started again. The Roman Forum was constantly changing, some objects were destroyed, new ones appeared, the purpose of sites and buildings changed. The most significant objects are available to contemporaries, most of which have survived quite well.

The exact address of the Roman Forum and excursions therein

According to the official website of this historical monument, its exact address is Via della Salaria Vecchia, 5/6. The visiting schedule for tourists states that thematic and general excursions run from 8.30 am to 5 pm. After the closure of the Roman Forum, preventive and sanitary work is underway. Unfortunately, not all tourists realize that they are in a significant historical place, and leave inscriptions on the ruins or rubbish, trying to chop off fragments of the ruins for memory.

Tours in the Roman Forum are both group and private. Guide services cost from 4 to 50 €, depending on the number of participants in the group, the topic and duration of the lecture, the time of visiting the historical monument. In addition, each visitor will have to pay for the very fact of entering the territory of the Roman Forum. But the financial costs seem to be a small fraction of the amount of impressions received during the excursion and new knowledge about the origins of not only Italian, but also world culture.
