The Leningrad Region is one of the unique regions of the country. Among other Russian regions, it stands out for its pronounced originality of cultural attractions of national and world significance.

Just an hour's drive from St. Petersburg there is a tiny, but rather interesting city - Shlisselburg. It stands on the left bank of the Neva, near Lake Ladoga. Its main attraction is the Oreshek fortress, erected on the island of the same name. It was founded in the 14th century by the Novgorodians to protect the Russian lands from the invasion of the Swedes. Everything here literally breathes antiquity. Despite the fact that the fortress is popular with tourists, it still managed to preserve its original atmosphere - there are no street stalls with souvenirs or cafes. Only the tall walls of the fortress with towers crowned with carved weather vane and old buildings.

Vyborg is also worth a visit. This city is attractive, above all, the only medieval castle in our country and an abundance of historical monuments. The castle was built in the 13th century. From its observation deck, the city is visible at a glance. In addition, there is a unique Mon Repos park in Vyborg. Its highlight is the bizarre heaps of granite rocks.

The city of Vsevolozhsk, located seven kilometers from St. Petersburg, is also interesting. It is worth visiting the Priyutino estate, where Bryullov, Pushkin and Krylov once visited.

There are places that you should definitely visit at least once in your life. Staraya Ladoga is one of such places. This is a tiny village with a great past. It was built on the trade route "from the Varangians to the Greeks." His land probably still remembers the heavy tread of the ancient Scandinavians. Previously, Staraya Ladoga was considered one of the ten large cities in Russia. Today, from among other villages, it is distinguished by an old fortress, which stands on the steep bank of the Volkhov River, as well as several ancient churches.

It is impossible not to mention the city of Tikhvin, whose rich and interesting history is reflected in the surviving buildings. The main attraction of this city is the Assumption Monastery. Crowds of pilgrims flock here to touch the miraculous icon of the Tikhvin Mother of God.
