Dombay Mountain Territory

The mountainous territory of Dombai is also known as the Dombai glade. It is located in the Caucasus Mountains, or rather in the North Caucasus region, which is located on the southern border of Russia. The North Caucasus includes the Ciscaucasia - a flat area north of the mountains between the Sea of Azov, the Kerch Strait and the Caspian Sea and the northern part of the Greater Caucasus Range, except for the eastern ridges that belong to Azerbaijan. The Greater Caucasus Range stretches between the Black and Caspian Seas for more than a thousand kilometers. The territory of the North Caucasus is divided between several Russian subjects: Krasnodar and Stavropol Territories, Adygea, Kabardino-Balkaria, Dagestan, Karachay-Cherkessia and others.

Dombay is located in the Karachay-Cherkess Republic, which is located in the northwestern part of the ridge. From the south, the territory of the Dombai glade is limited by the Main Caucasian ridge, otherwise there are no clear boundaries of the glade, since this is not an administrative unit. Dombay is the name of the area where three large gorges - Dombay-Elgen, Amanauz and Alibek - are connected. They form a vast clearing between the Caucasus Mountains at an altitude of about 1600 meters above sea level.

The name "Dombai", according to one version, is translated from Karachai language as "the bison" - these animals had lived in the forests of the North Caucasus in large numbers.

Dombayskaya glade is included in the Teberda nature reserve, from here many excursion routes to the main natural monuments of the protected territory of the North Caucasus begin.

Among the attractions of the Dabie - Concourse waterfall, the peak of Ine, cliffs, Striped mountains, the turye lake and the Alibek glacier.

Mountain and village Dombay

The highest point of the Dombai glade is the Dombai-Elgen mountain, also known as simply Dombai. It rises above the terrain to a height of 4046 meters and has two more peaks below - 4036 and 3950 meters. To the west of the mountain there is a small urban-type settlement of the same name - Dombay. It is located at the confluence of Alibek and Dombay-Elgen at the source of the Teberda Amanauz River. This village is one of the most popular ski resorts in the country, a well-known winter sports center with a developed tourist infrastructure. There are several dozen hotels in the village, numerous cafes and restaurants with Caucasian cuisine, five cable car lines that take visitors up to three thousand meters above sea level. From such a height, the entire Dombai glade is clearly visible, decorated with mountain ranges with Dombai-Elgen at the head.
