The largest salt lake on earth, officially called the Caspian Sea, is a great beach destination. The best Russian Caspian resorts are located in the Republic of Dagestan (Makhachkala, Kaspiysk, Lagan and Derbent regions), as well as in the Astrakhan region.

Step 1

The beautiful Caspian Sea has long been chosen by tourists from all over Russia and neighboring countries as a vacation spot. On the shores of the Caspian there are quite a few resort towns and small villages where you can relax on your own (in hotels and boarding houses), or by taking a tourist voucher at an agency. In addition, the Caspian resorts extend to the territory of Kazakhstan, Iran, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan, so there is always an opportunity to visit neighboring countries and evaluate the level of service at their resorts.

Step 2

Speaking of Russian resorts on the Caspian Sea, they usually mean the resorts of Dagestan and the Astrakhan region. You can get here in several ways. The first, the fastest and most expensive, is a flight to Makhachkala or Astrakhan. Airplanes fly to these two large cities from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Kazan and other large transport centers. You can get from Astrakhan to the sea by taxi or by public transport (about 60 km to the coast). Makhachkala is itself a seaside resort, but other places can be reached by car, taxi or bus.

Step 3

A more budgetary and common way to get to the Caspian Sea is by train. It takes about 2 days to get from Moscow or St. Petersburg to Makhachkala, the trains are quite comfortable, departures are daily. Residents of the nearest republics and regions can use regular buses or go by car on their own.

Step 4

Tourist vouchers to the Caspian Sea are quite rare due to their unpopularity with vacationers. Tourist vouchers are usually sold to the Astrakhan region, where you can not only relax on the sea, but also visit the health-improving salt resorts of Akhtubinsk (in particular, on the Baskunchak mineral lake). Independent travelers usually rest in Dagestan.

Step 5

Accommodation in the resorts of the Caspian Sea is quite diverse. In Dagestan, the system of renting rooms and apartments is widely developed, there are also small family hotels and boarding houses, in Derbent and Kaspiysk there are even large chain hotels. Usually, the price includes only accommodation, in rare cases - accommodation and breakfast. The Astrakhan region, unfortunately, can only provide a few boarding houses and campings. Basically, vacationers here are based in tent camps, coming as "savages", or rent cottages within walking distance to the sea.
