Kamyshin is located on the banks of the Volga, on the border of the Saratov and Volgograd regions. The easiest way to get to the city is by road, since there is no railway connection through it. There is a dead end station here.
Kamyshin is known as a city rich in watermelons. It is here in early September that the "Watermelon Festival" is held annually, uniting more than five thousand people in a procession along the central streets to Komsomolskaya Square. Guests from other regions come to participate in the festival. They are interested not only in the carnival procession, but also in the contests - "Obzhorka", "Watermelon Mochilovo", "Harvest" and others.
Kamyshin is also famous for the fact that it was here that the Hero of the Soviet Union, the famous pilot Alexei Petrovich Maresyev was born and raised. A monument has been erected in his honor, near which a citywide rally is held on May 25 every year.
Location relative to Saratov and Volgograd
The city is located on the right bank of the Volga, right in the middle between Saratov and Volgograd. To get to Kamyshin from Saratov, you will need to overcome the same 200 km as from Volgograd. The road from Saratov is of good quality, while the state of the Volgograd direction is considered one of the worst in Russia.
A river called Kamyshinka flows through Kamyshin. It divides the city into two parts - "Old City" and "New City". To provide transport links between the two parts of the city, the Borodinsky Bridge was built. Kamyshinka flows into the Volga, which here reaches a width of about 7 km.
How can you get to Kamyshin by rail
You can get to Kamyshin through Petrov Val, which is a kind of satellite town. It is about 20 km from Kamyshin. Petrov Val is famous for the fact that the main railway communications of the southern and northern directions pass through it, while Kamyshin is a dead end. Many people prefer to go from Kamyshin to other cities precisely through Petrov Val, to which there is an electric train and fixed-route taxis.
Since Kamyshin is located almost in the steppe, forest plantations are rarely found in the vicinity. At the beginning of the last century, a nursery was planted two kilometers from the city center to protect city streets from sand. Nowadays it is one of the most popular places for walking and orienteering competitions.
Higher up the Volga from the city, only 45 km away is Urakov Hillock. It is mentioned in V. Yan's story "Towards the South Sea". It was in this place that Khan Batu crossed the Volga and organized a long stay. Urakov hillock is covered with secrets and legends, since Stepan Razin was also hiding in its depths together with the militia. There is a belief that treasures are buried in the vicinity of Urakov Hill, which are still looking for those who are eager to get rich.
Near Kamyshin there is an archeological monument - Ushi Mountains. The mountains are known for having natural caves that are currently inaccessible to visitors.
Across the Volga, about 200 km away, there is Lake Elton, famous for its medicinal properties.
