Today it is the best preserved fortress in Ukraine. There are many myths and legends around the Akkerman fortress. It is said that horned creatures live here, some of the guards quit their jobs after hearing the constant groaning from the tower of the fortress.

At one time, the fortress consisted of 4 courtyards:

  1. Citadel. The officers and the commandant lived here. This part also contained a powder charge and an arsenal;
  2. Civil courtyard. Local residents lived, they were hidden from enemies behind the thick walls of the fortress. Today, most of the buildings of the civil courtyard have been destroyed.
  3. Household yard. The name of the yard speaks for itself. The imported goods were stored here. This courtyard has not survived to this day.
  4. Garrison yard. This part housed the personnel of the fortress.

The fortress was so well thought out that virtually every courtyard could independently conduct a defense.

Legend of the Akkerman Fortress

One of the legends says that at one time the fortress was led by Alexander the Good, and he had a daughter, Tamara. She was very beautiful, but besides her beauty, she was distinguished by her cruelty.

She robbed and mocked her people, went and organized night robberies. When her father went to war, Tamara asked him for money, allegedly for the construction of a new monastery, but instead of the monastery, he built another tower within the walls of the fortress

From the new tower, which was built for her father's money, Tamara carried out robberies against her population. When her father arrived and found out about her actions, he cursed her. As soon as the curse touched her ears, she fell asleep. While she was sleeping, she was brought to the bathhouse, which she also built, and walled up alive.

Now the locals say that they sometimes see Tamara in this tower. They say that her spirit will forever remain among the dead of the old fortress.
