When going abroad, most people try to be a lot more prudent than in their daily life. And in the first lines of the list of things to think about in advance, there should be a question of what to do if you lose your passport. After all, without documents, both legal departure and return to Russia are impossible.

When going on a trip abroad, think about possible problems with the most important documents. If you lose the most significant of them - your passport - you will need another identity document. Therefore, take your Russian passport or driver's license with you. Another option is to take a certified copy of your passport from a notary office. And the least that can be done is to take scans from the passport and send them to your own email address. If the need arises, you can extract them from there and print. Such a printout will not replace a lost document, but it will make it easier to obtain a certificate that will help you do without it when you return to the country.

When this trouble happens, immediately contact the local police department with a statement about the loss of your passport. Perhaps the police will be able to find the loss in hot pursuit, and in the worst case, after completing the necessary documents, they will give you an appropriate certificate. It will be required from you by diplomats who are responsible for working with Russian citizens in this country.

With this certificate, contact the nearest consular office of Russia. You will need to write an application and present an identity document - a copy of your passport, internal passport, driver's license. If such a document does not appear, your identity must be verified by two people who have everything in order with their documents.

If consular officers consider your identity documents or certificates insufficient, they will send a request to the FMS of Russia, the answer to which can be expected up to 20 days. And if there is not enough complete information there, then the FSB of the Russian Federation will check you, which can take up to three months.

If the documents submitted to the consulate are sufficient, then it should take no more than two days to issue a replacement passport “Certificate of entry (return) to the Russian Federation”. Along with its receipt, issue a notarized translation of the certificate from the police station - it will be necessary to obtain a new passport.

With the obtained certificate, you can stay in the country for 15 days. Please note that it only gives the right not to cross the Russian border, so you cannot return home in transit through other states. Within three days after entering Russia, hand over this certificate with the mark of the border checkpoint to the department of the FMS that issued your lost passport.
