Step 1
At first glance, the search for water in the desert seems like an absolutely hopeless business. The sun, located almost at its zenith, evaporates any moisture, the hot sand seems completely dry. Nevertheless, there is still a chance of finding water.
Step 2
Find the highest point and view the surrounding area from it. Look for lowlands, dry streams, any signs of uneven terrain. Pay attention to vegetation - if there are bright spots of greenery or trees somewhere, then the groundwater is very close. It is in such places that it is worth looking for water in the first place.
Step 3
If you manage to find the bed of a dry stream, your chances of finding water are greatly increased. Choose the lowest place and start digging: at first the ground will be completely dry, then it will begin to gradually moisten - this is a good sign. At a depth of about a meter, make a small depression in the dug hole and wait for it to fill with water. There are chances to find water even when there are only dunes around, you just have to dig a deeper hole. Dig it from the leeward side of the dune.
Step 4
The sun can help you collect precious moisture. Dig a hole about a meter in diameter and about seventy centimeters deep. If the bottom of the pit is even a little damp, this is a good sign, but even it seems that there is always moisture in absolutely dry sand. Cover the pit with plastic, placing any container on the bottom. Press the edges of the polyethylene with stones or sprinkle tightly.
Step 5
Throw a pebble in the center of the film; it should be exactly above the container. Evaporating moisture will condense on the film and drain into the container. In this way, you can collect up to one and a half liters of water per day. There will be more of it if you throw plucked plants into a hole, under a film.
Step 6
The solar condenser described above is a very reliable method for extracting water. It is also convenient because it requires the hottest daytime sun, when it is best for the traveler to rest. Drive through the desert early in the morning and evening, and in the afternoon, set up a solar condenser and rest, conserving your energy.
Step 7
Pay attention to any paths, they may lead you to the well. Watch out for birds, they can hunt in the oasis area. Traces of droppings from camels and other pack animals are also a good sign. Try to determine where the animals were moving and walk in the same direction.
