History

The Ryazan Kremlin is the oldest part of Pereyaslavl-Ryazan (as this Russian city was called earlier) and one of the oldest museums in our country. The Kremlin stands on a high hill, protected on three sides by rivers and a moat.

The first Kremlin, built ten centuries ago in Pereyaslavl-Ryazansky, was located just north of the current one and occupied about 2 hectares. There was also a princely tower. Gradually the city grew, and with it the Kremlin - churches and cathedrals, monasteries gradually appeared here.

Description

Today the territory of the modern Ryazan Kremlin is huge. In total, the ensemble includes 18 historical and cultural monuments dating back to different historical eras. Eight of them are temples.

To the south-west of the Kremlin is the Cathedral Park, where there is a chapel built in honor of the 900th anniversary of the city of Ryazan. The temple of Elijah the Prophet is located nearby, and the Cathedral bell tower 86 meters high rises a little further. It was built almost over a century, therefore, looking at the bell tower, one can trace how the architecture changed - from classicism to empire. On the third tier of the bell tower, there is an observation deck offering impressive views of Ryazan and its environs.

There is a pier on the bank of the Trubezh River near the Kremlin. From there, excursion boats leave every hour along the Oka. The cost of the trip is from 300 to 400 rubles.

Not far from the pier you can see a pontoon bridge thrown across the Trubezh River and leading to the Kremlin Island. The island is practically cut off from the city during the flood. In the future, a tourist and entertainment "Kremlin Posad" should appear on it.

Not far from the Kremlin are the House of the Clergyman and the two-tent church of the Holy Spirit, built on the edge of the cliff. It is adjoined by a three-tiered hipped-roof bell tower, which houses the scientific library of the museum complex.

The oldest building in the Ryazan Kremlin is the Nativity of Christ Cathedral, built on this site in the fifteenth century. It has been restored and rebuilt more than once, so not all elements have survived.

The largest building on the territory of the Kremlin, not related to religion, is Oleg's Palace. It is richly decorated with baroque elements, terem windows and colored platbands. Today, the building houses the historical exposition of the museum and exhibition halls.

It is better to go around the territory of the Kremlin in a circle. Then you can see the Bishops' Garden, and the old garden, and the Kremlin rampart 290 meters long.

Private travel agencies offer guided tours of the Kremlin. On average, they are designed for a 6-hour sightseeing tour with lunch at a cafe. Cost - from 1000 rubles.
