Museum history

The main idea of the museum complex was to preserve the memory of the place where the glory of the Russian fleet came from. It was in Pereslavl that the young Tsar Peter studied seafaring, the first boat called "Fortuna" was built here, which laid the foundation for the Petrovskaya amusing flotilla. In 1803, on the initiative of the governor of Vladimir I. M. Dolgoruky, the Botny House was erected - a room for storing a unique boat. The construction was carried out with the money of the local nobility, from the first days the museum was open to the public. The building in the style of classicism is decorated with a portico with 4 columns and is crowned with the St. Andrew's flag - the symbol of the Russian fleet. The Botny House displays the ship itself, as well as anchors, steering wheels and other items from the warships of the Peter the Great era.

Later, an Obelisk was built on the territory in honor of Peter's stay on Lake Pleshcheyevo, a stone gatehouse, the Arc de Triomphe, the White Palace and a rotunda for receptions and dances. These buildings completed the museum complex, and by 1853 the complex acquired its finished form. In 1913, the ensemble was completed by the pier and the belvedere.

Today the museum combines the functions of a repository of unique artifacts and a place for educational programs. Permanent and thematic exhibitions are held on the territory of the complex, historical balls and presentations are held in the "Rotunda" hall. The main attraction is the authentic "Fortuna" bot, exhibited in a separate building. The most reliable sculptural portrait of Peter I is also located here. The Tsar's room with original furniture and utensils has been recreated in the White Palace. Sailing gear, weapons from ships, construction tools and nautical maps are also on display.
