Azov is a cozy green town located on the banks of the Don River. This city is a keeper of history and is well worth a visit for the main attractions.
Fortress Azov (delta of the Don River). At the moment, there are two defensive ramparts and the Alexander Gate. On one of the shafts, mock-ups of guns are installed. For this fortress, fierce battles between Russia and Turkey were fought. In 1774 this fortress was finally annexed to Russia. The Azov sea port is located near the fortress.
Historical Center. To see the old houses, walk along the streets of Moskovskaya, Lenin, Dzerzhinsky, Petrovsky Boulevard. Many houses are still residential, some houses museums.
Monument to Peter I. Erected on Petrovsky Boulevard near the building of the local history museum in 1996 in honor of the 300th anniversary of the Russian Navy. The figure is cast in bronze and is 3 meters high. The pedestal is made of a solid block.
Azov Museum of Local Lore (Moscow 38/40) A feature of this museum is the richest collection of Sarmatian gold. Also on display are items found in the mounds - jewelry, dishes, weapons. Many people are attracted to this museum by the skeleton of the Trogonteria elephant, which is the ancestor of the woolly mammoth. The find is about 700,000 years old.
Powder warehouses (Lermontov 6). The warehouses are a branch of the local history museum. Here is the diorama "The capture of the Turkish fortress of Azov by the troops of Peter I in 1696". After reconstruction in 2010, you can visually familiarize yourself with the structure of the powder magazine from the Catherine times. The walls make the cellar unique - they are double and with built-in ventilation ducts. This avoids a sharp temperature difference between indoor and outdoor. Near the warehouses, you can see a model of a mound with original stone statues installed on it and an authentic Russian cannon of the late 17th century.
